Performing a clean uninstall of Ideagen Mail Manager
Who is this article for?
Users who want to ensure Ideagen Mail Manager is uninstalled entirely.
Local admin permissions required.
When you uninstall Ideagen Mail Manager, certain config files are left behind.
This article will walk you through the steps you need to take need to fully uninstall the application.
1. Deactivating licenses
Before uninstalling, we recommend deactivating the license.
To deactivate a license:
- Access Ideagen Mail Manager on the machine you want to uninstall it from.
- Go to Help.
- Select Key Manager.
- Click Deactivate.
Note that if you are no longer able to access the old PC to deactivate the license, this is not a critical step. You can use the Neo License Management Portal to deactivate the user's license that way instead, in that case.
2. Backing up data
Before uninstalling the app, we strongly recommend backing up any personal Collections you have stored locally.
To back up a Collection:
- Open Windows File Explorer.
- Browse to %AppData%\Oasys\Mail Manager.
- Copy Personal.mmcollection to another folder.
When you have finished the clean uninstall steps below, restore this file to the above folder.
3. Uninstalling app
To uninstall the app:
- Close Outlook.
- Go to Control Panel.
- Select Uninstall a program.
- Find all occurrences that look like this:
Mail Manager x.y (where x.y are the version number installed)
Mail Manager Multi User Installer (this may not appear depending on the install type)
eg: - For each of these, click the three dots next to them and Click Uninstall.
Once done, restart your computer.
Troubleshooting
Reinstallation via Group Policy (GPO)
If Mail Manager reappears shortly after a restart or login, it is likely being managed by your IT department via Group Policy (GPO), Intune, or SCCM.
The Symptom: You uninstall the app, but it returns automatically upon the next login.
The Fix: You must contact your IT Administrator to have your machine or user account removed from the deployment group. A local "clean uninstall" cannot override a central deployment policy.
Failing to remove the Multi-User Installer
Failing to remove the Mail Manager Multi User Installer, if it exists, will also cause the application to reinstall when the user next logs in. This is a local installer that acts as a "seed" for the application.
Missing Installers for Older Versions
Older versions may require the original installer file to complete the uninstallation.
If you are prompted for an
.msior.exethat you do not have, please contact Ideagen Support as we may be able to provide a matching version. If Support has already provided you with specific manual steps to follow this article to bypass a missing uninstaller, please follow those instructions accordingly.
4. Uninstalling web app/desktop web app
If you used the web app (for using MM purely online) or the desktop web app (for using Mail Manager with New Outlook), you will also need to uninstall this component.
-
Remove the Outlook Web Add-in:
Open Outlook (Web or New Outlook for Windows).
Go to Home > Get Add-ins (or All Apps > Add apps).
Select My add-ins.
Locate Ideagen Mail Manager, click the three dots (...), and select Remove.
Note for Admins/Managed Environments:
If the "Remove" option is greyed out, or if the add-in automatically reinstalls after a restart, it has likely been centrally deployed by your IT department. In this case, the add-in must be removed by a Microsoft 365 Administrator via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center (under Settings > Integrated Apps).
-
Verify Background Processes (Optional Safety Check):
-
While the standard uninstaller in Step 3 should close these, it is worth checking Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to ensure no orphaned processes remain:
MailManager.Now.Filer.exe(The background process for New Outlook/NOW mode).mailmanager.electronsearch(The search component process).
If found, right-click and select End Task.
-
5. Clearing local data
Installation
To clear local files:
- Open File Explorer.
- Navigate to the app installation folder.
If this was a per machine install, it will be C:\Program Files\Mail Manager.
If it was a per user install, it will be %localappdata%\Mail Manager\Program Files\.
Older versions may be under C:\Program Files\28 Hands\ or C:\Program Files\Oasys. - Check for a folder called Ideagen Mail Manager.
- Delete it if it's present.
If you have only used one type of installer in the past, only one of these sets of containers may exist but we need to clear all that do.
Registry
To clear the registry:
- Click Start.
- Run regedit.
- Navigate to the app reg locations.
You can find them under HKEY_Current_User\Software\ and HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Wow6432Node\. - Remove these containers: 28Hands, Ideagen Mail Manager, Oasys.
AppData
To clear application data:
- Open File Explorer.
- Navigate to %localappdata%.
- Delete these folders: 28Hands, Mail Manager, Oasys.
- Navigate to %appdata%.
- Delete these folders: 28Hands, Oasys, mailmanager.electronsearch.
Some of these locations may contain no Ideagen Mail Manager related folders. This is expected as some of the folders are created only if certain features have been used within the app.
6. What about these other apps?
If you see any of these apps showing in installed apps:
Or this in Outlook:
All these relate to Ideagen Mail Manager Enterprise which is a different product to Mail Manager and these should not have been installed in the first place unless you were intending to use that application. For more details on removing these, please refer to Uninstalling Ideagen Mail Manager Enterprise.
7. Still not uninstalling
If having followed these steps you were still unable to cleanly uninstall Mail Manager, then please contact Ideagen Support for further advice.
