Who is this article for?Users troubleshooting error determining protection scheme.
Command Prompt access is required.
This article aims to assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting the "Error Determining Protection Scheme" message encountered when adding a license to Mail Manager. The steps below will help to identify the underlying cause.
1. Diagnosing MailManager.SAM.exe
Please see below for a list of steps required to test the SAM.exe license validation. The output should give us an indication on whether the executable is being blocked on the machine running Mail Manager.
- Open File Explorer and if you are on a per user installation, go to:
%localappdata%\Mail Manager\Program Files\x86
If you are on a per machine installation, go to:
C:\Program Files\Mail Manager\x86
- Clear the current path in the File Explorer window, then type "cmd" and press Enter to open the command prompt.
- In the command prompt, type the following and then press Enter:
MailManager.SAM.exe protectionscheme
- We then need to see a results as a screenshot, as per this example:
- We can review the results in Support to see if there are any issues with the SAM.exe traffic to auth.mailmanager.com.
- If blocked, the IT department there may need to allow this through the firewall or Microsoft Defender.
Below are examples of error messages you might encounter and their likely causes:
- "Error The remote server returned an error: (407) Proxy Authentication Required." This suggests Mail Manager is blocked and needs to be whitelisted.
- "Error uh IPC error." This occurs when there are no IPC files, usually due to the installation method used. It may be that the permissions in place don't allow this to be installed this way and the other installation method may need to be used.

2. Checking URL
Ensure access to the the following URL: https://auth.mailmanager.com/.
For success you will see: Cannot GET /.
