How to check if you have a Mail Manager per user or per machine installation
Who is this article for?
Users or Admins wanting to understand what installation version they use.
This help article shows you the basics of the 2 different Mail Manager installations you can have and where to check what version you have.
1. How to check what installation type I am using
You can check what Mail Manager installation type you have by going to:
Classic Outlook > Mail Manager > Help > About
You will see "Per-User Installation or per-Machine installation
2. Why does Mail Manager have two installation types?
Mail Manager can be installed on servers and desktop computers, these can require different set ups and ways to manage.
Mail Manager also has evolved over time with Microsoft windows to allow installations into the local profile, this gives additional benefits like not needing elevated privileges.
However, administrators of terminal server installs of Mail Manager still need the old program files installation method.
3. The differences between both installation types.
The simple differences are:
Mail Manager per user is the recommended and most common installation type.
This installation type has automatic updates (that can be deactivated) and it installs into the users windows profile so does not require elevated privileges.
Mail Manager per machine is generally designed for servers and does not have automatic updates.
This will install into C:\program files and does require elevated privileges to install or uninstall.
