Filing messages in PST files
Who is this article for?Users who want to file emails contained in .pst files.
No elevated access or permissions are required.
Mail Manager allows you to file messages stored in .pst files efficiently directly from your Inbox.
This article lists the prerequisites for the Tool, and instructions for how to use it.
1. Setup
To use this feature, you need to be running Mail Manager 14.0 on the desktop version of Outlook.
Your PST files need to be located on a local drive, as network drives are not supported.
Emails must be in PST folders (inbox, deleted items etc), not the root of the PST file.
Not seeing the option in the Tools menu?
Ask your Administrator to ensure EmailFiling.cfg includes the line Enablepstfiler=1, following the steps for applying additional User Preferences.
2. File a single PST file
To file an individual .pst file to a single destination folder:
- Open Tools.
- Click File All Messages in .pst.
- Select Single .pst file for the Selection Type.
- Click the Browse button to select the .pst file.
- Select either Folder... or Location... to choose where the file will be filed to.
Sub-folders will not be created in the destination, only parent folders. - Click Start.
You can click the Triangle icon to see the filing progress. On completion, the Generate Report button will become active, allowing you to export the details of the items processed.
To stop the process, click Close. All messages already processed will remain filed. If you restart the process, messages that have already been processed will be skipped, saving you some time!
Working with sub-folders?
Creation of sub-folders in the destination folder is not currently supported.
3. File multiple PST files
To file multiple .pst files to a single destination folder:
- Open Tools.
- Click File All Messages in .pst.
- Select Multiple .pst files for the Selection Type.
- Click the Browse button to select the .pst files.
- Select either Folder... or Location... to choose where the file will be filed to.
Sub-folders will not be created in the destination, only parent folders. - Click Start.

4. File multiple PST files using a CSV file
To file multiple.pst files to specified destination folders:
- Open Tools.
- Click File All Messages in .pst.
- Select Single .csv file for the Selection Type.
- Click the Browse button to select the .csv and .pst files.
- Destination section will be greyed out, as the Destination is defined in the CSV file.
- Click Start.
You can click the Triangle icon to see the filing progress. On completion, the Generate Report button will become active, allowing you to export the details of the items processed.
To stop the process, click Close. All messages already processed will remain filed. If you restart the process, messages that have already been processed will be skipped, saving you some time!

4.1. CSV examples
Each CSV file needs to contain a:
- File Path - File path of the location of the .pst file.
- Folder name - Name of the .pst folder to be filed (e.g. Inbox, Sent Items, etc.)
- Destination - Full path of the destination the items will be filed to.
